Director Stephen LaRoda, a member of Squad A 1986 of the Department of Immigration, brings to the role nearly four decades of committed public service rooted in discipline, experience, and strategic leadership.
His career began as a frontier officer at Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA), where he quickly earned a reputation for his firm enforcement style and keen understanding of immigration procedures. Throughout his tenure, he has served in various islands across The Bahamas, including Grand Bahama, Cat Cay, Bimini, Eleuthera, Abaco, and San Salvador, contributing to the strengthening of immigration operations in both major ports and remote locations.
Mr. La Roda is widely respected for his direct and structured leadership style. He has been instrumental in several key advancements within the Department of Immigration. Notably, he played a central role in the enhancement of operations at the Detention Centre, following recommendations from the United Nations Council. He also helped draft the Centre’s administrative regulations, establishing clearer procedures and improved oversight.
In the area of international standards, Mr. LaRoda served as the lead drafter of the country’s operating guidelines for refugee administration. This significant achievement shaped the Department’s approach to asylum and the protection of displaced persons and continues to guide national policy on these matters.
In the immediate past, Director LaRoda oversaw several critical functions within the Department, including asylum and refugee matters, permit processing, machine room operations, departmental supplies, overall security, and refugee inquiries. He also led departmental efforts to combat trafficking-in-persons (TIP) in close coordination with the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, Mr. LaRoda is a dedicated member of Evangelistic Temple and the proud father of three children. His life reflects a commitment to leadership, faith, and family—hallmarks of a career defined by service, purpose, and steady guidance.
