Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration
The Hon. Frederick A. Mitchell, MP, was born in Nassau, The Bahamas, on 5 October 1953 to the late Frederick A. Mitchell, Sr. and Lilla Angelina Mitchell (née Forde).
Mr. Mitchell was officially sworn in as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration on 15 May 2026. His ministerial portfolio includes responsibility for foreign affairs, foreign missions, protocol matters, extradition, treaty succession, the coordination of applications for international technical assistance, Law of the Sea matters, United Nations (UN), Organization of American States (OAS), and CARICOM affairs, as well as passports, visas, and immigration.
Minister Mitchell previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Public Service from 2002 to 2007. He also served as Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Culture from 1992 to 1997, Chairman of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of CARICOM, and as a founding member of The Bahamas Committee on Southern Africa. More recently, he chaired the Commonwealth Experts Committee for Presidential Elections.
As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mitchell was instrumental in efforts to integrate Haiti into CARICOM. He also negotiated several significant international agreements on behalf of The Bahamas, including the Schengen Visa Agreement and the European Partnership Agreement.
During his tenure, he played a key role in establishing the Bahamian diplomatic mission in Cuba and the Embassy of The Bahamas in the People’s Republic of China, thereby strengthening the nation’s international presence and diplomatic relations.
As the Member of Parliament for Fox Hill, Mr. Mitchell established a permanent constituency office that now serves as a community centre for residents of the area. He has been actively involved in community development throughout Fox Hill and the wider constituency and has supported numerous educational institutions, including Sandilands Primary School, L.W. Young Junior High School, and Doris Johnson Senior High School.
Mr. Mitchell received his early education at Eastern Junior School and St. Augustine’s College. He pursued tertiary studies at Antioch College, Harvard University, and the University of Buckingham, earning a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature, a Master’s degree in Public Administration, and a Bachelor of Laws degree. He has also obtained professional qualifications and has been called to both the English Bar and The Bahamas Bar.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mitchell has been involved in numerous social and professional organisations. He is a member of the Bahamas Bar Association, a founding member of The Bahamas Committee on Southern Africa, and a former activist with The Bahamas Human Rights Association. He currently serves as Co-Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party’s Committee on Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
Prior to his ministerial appointments, Mr. Mitchell practised law as a sole practitioner at Gwendolyn House. He has also held positions with the Bahamas Tourist News Bureau, Bahamas Information Services, the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas, the Office of the Prime Minister, The Herald, Al Dillette & Associates, and Toothe, Unwala and Leonard.
Minister Mitchell’s extensive experience in law, public service, diplomacy, and international affairs continues to support his leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Immigration.
